The Department of Surgery

The Department of Surgery is an accredited workplace that provides a complete range of diagnostic and outpatient medical care. It uses the latest surgical methods in multimodal treatment. It performs a wide range of operations within the scope of one-day surgery.

An important part of the department‘s activities is hepatopancreatobiliary, vascular, thoracic and abdominal surgery, surgery of the esophagus, endocrine organs, especially the thyroid gland, complete breast surgery and kidney transplantation. In many disciplines the Department uses miniinvasive laparoscopic and video-toracoscopic surgical techniques.

The up-to-date technical facilities and operating rooms make it possible to perform highly specialized and demanding surgical procedures to the highest current standards.

Within the Czech Republic, but also on a European scale, the Department of Surgery especially excels in the surgery of the liver, pancreas and biliary tract. It has achieved similar successes in vascular surgery.

The Department cooperates intensively with other specialized Departments of the University Hospital Pilsen The Department of Surgery is a training center in the field of general, special, vascular, and thoracic surgery as well as oncosurgery, and significantly participates in the teaching of preand postgraduate students of the Charles University, Faculty of Medicine in Pilsen.

Research is mainly focused on the field of oncosurgery, where the priority is research of liver cancer and regeneration of the liver parenchyma, invloving close cooperation with the Biomedical Center of the Faculty of Medicine in Pilsen. In the field of vascular surgery, the Department focuses on research into the etiopathogenesis of abdominal aortic aneurysms. The research results are presented at Czech and foreign conferences.
