The Department of Pneumology and Phthisiology is a highly specialized workplace for both outpatients and those which are hospitalized. The main areas of activity are: thoracic oncology, intensive pneumological care, obstructive pulmonary disease, interstitial lung processes and adult cystic fibrosis. The Department is part of the Pneumonia-Surgery Center of the University Hospital Pilsen, which focuses on the surgical treatment of lung tumors.
The Department provides diagnostic and therapeutic bronchology, medical treatment of lung function, and diagnosis and treatment of tuberculosis. There are centers for the treatment of difficult-to-treat asthma, for the diagnosis and treatment of sleep-related breathing disorders, and a center for overcoming tobaccoism.
The priorities of medical care include: comprehensive treatment of lung cancer including targeted treatment and immunotherapy, biological treatment of interstitial lung processes and difficult-to-treat asthma, non-invasive and invasive ventilation, high-flow oxygen therapy, diagnosis and treatment of pleural space, and search and preparation of patients indicated for lung transplantation. The Department provides diagnostic and therapeutic bronchoscopy and pneumological cytodiagnostics.
At the Department of Pneumology and Phthisiology, there are graduate studies conducted for Charles University, Faculty of Medicine in Pilsen and the Faculty of Health Care Studies of the University of West Bohemia and postgraduate education of doctors preparing for professional accreditation. The main research program which is repeatedly supported by grants is focused on the genetic aspects of lung cancer in relation to the results of imaging treatments and the morphology of tumors.
As future perspectives of the Department, its staff will further the development of intensive care, targeted treatment and immunotherapy, and continue to improve the search for early stages of cancer.
